Charlie Mitchell, an 18-year-old prodigy from Queensland, Australia, is making waves as a rising star among new-age crooners. His captivating voice and exceptional ability to connect with his audience have earned him the reputation of an old soul in a young body. This talent has not gone unnoticed. After being introduced by fellow entertainer Brian Evans, Charlie worked with multi-Grammy Award-winning producer Narada Michael Walden, who proclaimed him a “superstar in the making.”
Walden, known for his Grammy Award winning work with music legends such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and others, is just one of the industry heavyweights impressed by Charlie. Despite his youth, Charlie is already collaborating with a host of other talented producers and musicians. In 2022, Narada produced “Even After,” a song written by Brian Evans and Charlie, which debuted at No. 1 on the Global Play MPE Charts for Adult Contemporary Music.
Currently, Charlie is working with legendary guitarist and producer Louie Shelton, a member of the renowned LA Wrecking Crew, the session musician behind some of the world’s greatest hits and artists, to name only a few, The Monkees, John Lennon, Jackson 5, The Carpenters, Boz Scaggs, Neil Diamond, Lionel Ritchie and others. Louie is producing five songs for Charlie, including three original Big Band songs written by Charlie himself. Louie Shelton’s signature guitar riffs and solos have been heard on more hit records than any other session guitarist in history and will now also be heard on Charlie’s music.
In addition, Charlie is releasing several indie pop ballads produced by emerging Gold Coast producer Josh Beattie, aimed at appealing to his growing younger audience. Charlie currently has over 76,000 followers on Facebook, a number expected to grow significantly with the release of his new music.
Charlie is known for performing classics from legends like Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Michael Bublé, and others. With such an impressive team and a bright future ahead, Charlie Mitchell is poised to leave a significant mark on the music industry.
This session sees Charlie playing in a small band format, with Stray’s house band P.R.S. so Steve Rodda on guitar, Si Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass guitar.
Our FINAL GIG EVER is Steve Rodda (guitar), Neil Adam Richards (drums) and Mat Short bass guitar. Onwards and Upwards refers to the fact that we’ve hosted live music at Stray’s from this venue since 2007. This Sunday gig, just before the New Year, marks the final performance ever to happen at this address! Don’t panic, we’ll be doing it over the road from our new home in The Ossington, so it marks an end and a beginning.
Steve Rodda plays guitar with Stray’s house band PRS. We first met Steve when he introduced us to his long time side man John Illingworth and their guitar duo Double Take at our jazz and tapas nights back in 2010. Massively talented, Steve has been part of the bigger lineup of Nottingham-based Decent Chaps, has played too many festivals to note and has an ongoing project called Trio Des Chordes, accompanied by Double Bass and Violin, playing Gypsy Jazz.
The second half of 10-by-2 is Stray’s co-owner Mat Short on bass guitars. Mat originally played saxophone under the tutelage of hardcore avant garde proponent Jan Kopinski, followed by jazz theory studies with Trumpeter Nathan Bray. When Mat’s father passed away back in 2015, Mat decided to play the Fender Jazz bass that was left behind by his late dad – he’s since sold his saxophone and has turned to the dark side. Influences are far and wide, from Ellington and Guy Barker, through to the studio work of Hidden Orchestra and of course, the svelte sounds of Steely Dan.
Holding down the rhythm is Lincolnshire drummer Neil Adam Richards. Neil plays with Rachael Johnson, Andy Tytherleigh, Frank Birkbeck, The Josh Walter trio and more. He
No tickets needed for this one, but it’s definitely worth reserving a table if you want to watch the musicians play their final gig at our much-loved venue…
Frank Birkbeck is joined by Mat Short on bass guitar.
With over a 20 years of full-time music-making under his belt, Frank is known for his multi-instrumental expertise and popularity. His eclectic taste in music has seen him involved in a wide range of bands and projects. His trio, the ‘Frank Birkbeck Group’, is one of the most in-demand jazz groups in East Midlands.
Frank has performed at seemingly every jazz club and theatre going, which has included Ronnie Scott’s, Matt and Phreds, Troy bar, the Wardrobe & Peggies Skylight. This has lead him recently to perform in Europe.
Recently he has been selling out theatres, and is due to record his debut album under his own name. He has worked and gigged with national names such as Hugh Pascal, Alan Barnes, Snake Davis and Luca Boscagin.
This gig is a very chilled affair, with smooth music to chat along to, whilst sipping your favourite cocktail…
Originally introduced to Stray’s back on Middlegate at one of the early Jazz Festival musicians, Neil has been performing up here ever since. Hailing from a very musical family, Neil’s father continues to play double bass and is also a bandleader and conductor.
Neil started out very young on violin and discovered guitar in his later youth. His official trio perform all over the north west, playing both standards and many of Neil’s originals.
The outfit have been recording their suite of EP’s called Re-Works – repurposing existing hooks and established patterns. This exciting project generates new music and fresh lines of flight, aiming to draw out disparate angles hiding in the music. Lyrical content is present and correct, but respectfully adjusted, re-sited and not forgotten. This is praxis-focussed Action Jazz, Grunge Fusion, perhaps- and made with an resolutely open mind and a genuine sense of adventure.
His music is available on Spotify, BandCamp, Apple Music and YouTube.
Neil is joined by Mat Short (bass) and Neil Adam Richards (drums) for this unofficial trio session. We recommend you book for this one…
