Maff Potts 4 - Stamford - 17/12/21
It was always set to be a success, but none of the band could imagine how good the end result would be! PRS drummer Si Potts had invited his brother Maff to join us for a session before Christmas, back in 2019 and it was an absolute belter! The only way I can describe Maff is to Ray Charles meets Oscar Peterson – so we’re going to do it all again in 2021…
The brothers Potts have been playing together since they were boys under the watchful eye of their band leading and trumpet playing Dad.
Si is a regular face on the Stray’s jazz circuit, having enjoyed a successful career as a professional drummer with names like Stacy Kent, Jamie Cullum and in both the Maida Vale and Paris studios as a session drummer with the BBC.
Si & Maff met double bass player Steve Kershaw when they joined his 7-piece jump jive band The Honkin’ Hepcats who went on to be regulars at The Edinburgh Festival and Cork Jazz Festival for many years as well as a long running residency at London’s famous 100 Club on Oxford Street. Oxford-based Maff also plays with sax giant Alan Barnes.
His biggest influences are Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner and Dudley Moore. He has a distinctly funky tinge to his playing, exploited to full extent in his own band Trappist Funk (now defunct – or is that de-funked). Maff is also an accomplished composer and folks at Stray’s in Stamford will be treated to some of his very catchy tunes for this date.
FRIDAY NIGHT JAZZ SESSIONS AT STRAY’S ARE SPONSORED BY PRIMEPRINT…
HOW IT WORKS:
Doors open at 7:30pm and food is available to order from this time, until 9:00pm. Seats are unallocated, so get in early if you have specific requirements – please note, we always give priority to elderly, single and customers with disabilities.
We want you to have a great night with us! However, one man’s boogie is another man’s dirge, so we operate a minimal talking policy during the performances. We ask you to consider your neighbours in this respect.
We offer incentives to buy tickets on the night, to forthcoming gigs and recommend buying these in the interval, to save you waiting at the end of the night.
Lastly, from the staff at Stray’s and the house band, we look forward to seeing you and sharing some fabulous jazz with you…
